You CAN Take Your Dog - Just Use an Airline Carryon Dog Bag!
If you have a small dog and would like to take it with you
on a trip that requires a flight, don’t despair, you can probably take it in the
cabin with you in an airline carryon dog bag. There are some rules to follow,
including size limits and not all airlines allow it. But, once you clear those
hurdles, your dog can go virtually anywhere you can!
To start with, to carryon your dog in a bag, there’s
usually a weight limit which varies, but the maximum is on average 25lbs. And
your dog must be able to fit under the seat in front of you as per the
airlines. For common sense reasons you also want your dog to be able to stand
up and stretch it’s legs while in the bag, so factor that in when checking with
the airline what the under-seat dimensions are.
The airlines will also insist on absorbent liners for any
possible mess in the carrier. If your pet is prone to motion sickness, carry
extras. You could also use towels, but a puppy pad would be fine as well.
Bring a few, especially if it will be a long flight.
Before leaving on your trip, start getting your dog used to
the bag. Leave it open and put a treat or a favorite toy in there. Once
they’re used to the bag, close the bag and try walking around with them in it.
Bring them in public areas where there’s a lot of people and noise to
desensitize them. If you think they are comfortable enough, then it should be
fine to fly with them.
