Tips for A Stress Free Vacation

Vacations should be about relaxing and taking it easy – in other words, no stress. Unfortunately though, some vacations can turn into anxiety ridden periods which definitely aren’t fun! So, to make sure your next vacation is as restful and stress free as it should be, follow these tips and you’ll increase your odds of having the best time possible!

To begin with, be sure you have carefully planned your vacation. Most of the stressful vacation situations come up because of reservations that have fallen through, flights that are delayed or cancelled, or baggage that has been lost. To prevent situations like these, make sure to plan ahead as much as you can. Arrive at the airport with lots of time to check in, pass through security and get to your gate before your plane leaves. Many airports have areas where you can relax and wait for your flight if you arrived early, so don’t panic if you have extra time. Take this time to sit down, have a drink (but not too many or you might find another stressful vacation problem – not going anywhere because you’re drunk) and start your vacation early.

Don’t sweat the small stuff when you’re on vacation. If it takes a little extra time at the airport check-in desk or your bag is the last to come out at the baggage claim area, don’t dwell on it. Instead, take a deep breath and enjoy every minute of your vacation – it will be over all too soon. Enjoy all your hard work.

Try not to let your kids drive you crazy. Choruses of “are we there yet?” can sometimes make you nuts before the fun-filled family vacation even begins. Be sure to pack plenty of games and activities to keep your kids busy. The kids might expect to be entertained all 24 hours of the day while on vacation - but as many parents know, spending a few hours in the hotel room is not always a bad thing. Just make sure you always have something to fill the hands of a bored child.

Keep your focus on your vacation; after all, you’ve spent a lot of time and money to plan it. Constantly worrying about break-ins at home and the piles of work you left on your desk are a definite buzz-kill. So have a housesitter stay at your home or ask a friend or neighbour to stop by every day to pick up the mail and check everything out. And remember – worrying about your work while on vacation isn’t going to get it done, and it will still be there when you get back – so enjoy a margarita or daiquiri and forget about the stresses of every day life! Besides, you planned this in advance so someone is taking care of your work for you, right?

One of the biggest day-to-day stresses for all of us is meeting deadlines and avoiding being late – for anything and everything. So why would you add that kind of stress to your vacation? By over scheduling tours and activities, you’ll find yourself annoyed and tired at the end of every day. You’ll probably have as much time as you need to see everything you wanted to see even if you take it slowly. Prioritize your activities properly, and if you just don’t have time for those at the bottom of the list, you’ll be happy you decided to see the important things first.

A mistake that I made with my honeymoon was saving all the packing and running around until the last couple of days before we left. I ended up staying up all night and sleeping most of the first day. Don’t make the same mistake I did – get everything done a few days in advance and take it easy for the last few days. The last thing you want is to be exhausted when you finally do arrive at your destination!
